Greece power grid operator Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) has announced mainland Greece and Crete have been linked by a new grid line since May 24th.
This new Ariadne line consists of two 500 kV direct current (DC) subsea cables, each 335 km long, connecting the converter station in Attica (region of Athens), to the Damasta substation in Crete.
The cables will provide 1 GW of total transmission capacity and the integration of Crete into Greece’s mainland electricity grid is estimated to free about 2.5 GW of new renewable power capacity.
