Italy’s Terna secures 10 GWh of battery storage in landmark MACSE auction

Italy’s transmission system operator and GO15 member Terna awarded the full 10 GWh of battery storage capacity in its first MACSE (Meccanismo di Approvvigionamento di Capacità di Stoccaggio Elettrico / Electric Storage Capacity Procurement Mechanism) auction in early October, clearing at an extremely competitive average price of €12,959/MWh-year—far below the €37,000 cap.

Projects must be operational by 2028 to enhance grid flexibility and renewable integration.

Some key lessons and features include:

  • Fourfold oversubscription, signaling strong market demand.
  • Regional price variation (Sicily: €15,846; South/Calabria: €12,146).
  • €1 billion investment expected, backed by 15-year contracts.
