The UAE launches gigascale round-the-clock renewable energy project

The United Arab Emirates have announced they have initiated a groundbreaking gigascale renewable energy project, developed by Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC).

The project combines a 5.2GW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant with a 19GWh battery energy storage system (BESS), representing the largest and most technologically advanced system of its kind worldwide. It incorporates AI-driven forecasting and predictive analytics to address intermittency, enabling the delivery of 1GW of continuous, baseload renewable power at a globally competitive tariff.

Expected to be operational by 2027, the project involves a $6 billion investment, including the creation of over 10,000 jobs, and is projected to reduce annual CO emissions by 5.7 million tonnes. The initiative aligns with the country’s 2031 AI strategy, providing sustainable energy solutions for emerging technological demands.
