The United Arab Emirates have announced they have initiated a groundbreaking gigascale renewable energy project, developed by Masdar and Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC).
The project combines a 5.2GW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant with a 19GWh battery energy storage system (BESS), representing the largest and most technologically advanced system of its kind worldwide. It incorporates AI-driven forecasting and predictive analytics to address intermittency, enabling the delivery of 1GW of continuous, baseload renewable power at a globally competitive tariff.
Expected to be operational by 2027, the project involves a $6 billion investment, including the creation of over 10,000 jobs, and is projected to reduce annual CO₂ emissions by 5.7 million tonnes. The initiative aligns with the country’s 2031 AI strategy, providing sustainable energy solutions for emerging technological demands.
