India ahead of its climate goals with 50 GW of new renewable energy capacity in 2025

In 2025, India achieved a landmark expansion in renewable energy, adding 50 GW of capacity backed by $22.32 billion (Rs 2 trillion) in investments. This milestone elevated the country’s total non-fossil fuel capacity to 262 GW, accounting for 51% of its 510 GW total installed capacity, and puts India ahead of its Paris Agreement’s 2030 goal five years ahead of schedule.

The growth was primarily driven by solar energy, which contributed nearly 35 GW of the 50 GW added.

Persisting challenges include:

  • Grid imbalances and power curtailment due to rapid scaling;
  • Transmission infrastructure delays, particularly in Rajasthan;
  • Administrative hurdles like land acquisition and power purchase agreement (PPA) finalization.

Looking ahead, industry experts emphasize the need to strengthen transmission networks, accelerate renewable energy zones and storage solutions, and shift toward programmatic approaches to sustain momentum.
