SGCC announces new 5-year plan amid new milestone for China’s electricity consumption

GO15 member and Chinese power grid operator State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) announced a record 4 trillion yuan ($574 billion) five-year plan for 2026-2030, marking a 40% increase from the previous five-year period.

The funding is primarily focused on:

  • the west-to-east power transmission infrastructure, utilizing high-voltage lines to distribute electricity from western regions to eastern urban centers
  • expanding cross-provincial transmission capacity by 30%
  • developing off-grid and microgrid solutions, aligning with China’s goal to peak carbon emissions by 2030.

China’s power consumption reached a historic milestone in 2025, exceeding 10 trillion kilowatt-hoursa 5% year-on-year increase, according to National Energy Administration figures. This volume, more than double that of the United States and surpassing the combined consumption of the EU, Russia, India, and Japan, underscores China’s unprecedented energy demand.
