India releases its Draft National Electricity Policy, updating 2005 strategy

India’s Ministry of Power has unveiled the Draft National Electricity Policy 2026, a strategic framework designed to revise the 2005 policy and align the nation’s energy sector with its development goals and climate commitments.

The draft policy targets an increase in per capita electricity consumption, from 1,460 kWh (2024-25) to 2,000 kWh by 2030 and over 4,000 kWh by 2047 while simultaneously reducing emissions intensity by 45% below 2005 levels by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2070.

  • The draft emphasizes nuclear energy as a clean, reliable, and scalable solution for long-term energy security, setting an ambitious target of 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047.
  • The plan also requires 546 billion to 2.2 trillion dollars by 2047 for generation, transmission, and distribution.
