GO15 member and Brazilian power grid operator National Electric System Operator (ONS) has approved and launched this new area to develop the core power system tools in-house, while partnering and outsourcing for what is complementary.
To shape its response, ONS ran an international benchmark across three continents, drawing on the experience of peer operators, including GO15 members. The lesson was to internalize what is strategic, partner where specialization adds value, and treat open source and modular architecture as the direction of travel.
The result is a new Executive Management for Power System Modeling and Simulation Tools within ONS’s Planning Directorate: a dedicated home, with its own people, governance, and budget, organized around technical and delivery “communities” and a structured innovation pipeline, so the tools can keep evolving without ever compromising operational continuity.
