Brazil’s Ten-Year Energy Expansion Plan (PDE 2036), prepared by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) alongside the Energy Research Company (EPE), outlines R$ 3.3 trillion in sector-wide investments between 2027 and 2036.
- Brazilian domestic electricity consumption is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 3.4%, reaching 979 TWh by 2036 and driving total generation capacity from 829 TWh to 1,133 TWh.
- Renewables are slated to maintain nearly a 90% share of power generation (rising to 51.2% of the overall primary energy mix), with wind and solar assets combined generating roughly one-third of national electricity.
- Concurrently, micro- and mini-distributed generation (MMGD) infrastructure is expected to scale from 50 GW to 92 GW.
To balance variable renewable output and absorb an anticipated tenfold increase in data center loads, the plan integrates 7.2 GW of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and 2 GW of reversible pumped-storage hydro capacity. The draft document is under public consultation through November 6.
