National Grid awarded £12bn in HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) supply chain agreements on 21 August 2025, marking the final phase of its £59bn framework to upgrade the UK’s energy infrastructure.
Key details include:
- Lot 1 (£9.07bn): Six firms (Balfour Beatty, BAM Nuttall, Galliford Try, Laing O’Rourke, Skanska, Taylor Woodrow) will handle HVDC converter civil works.
- Lot 2 (£3.7bn): Three firms (Balfour Beatty, Murphy, VolkerFitzpatrick) will manage onshore cable civil works.
Contracts will span five years (extendable by three) and cover projects like Eastern Green Link 4 and LionLink, and aim to boost UK manufacturing, create jobs, and support the transition to low-carbon energy.
