Spanish company Lointek has announced the launch of the UK’s largest long-duration Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) facility for Highview, a British firm specialized in energy storage and flexibility solutions. The facility features a 50 MW power output and a 300 MWh storage capacity. Lointek was responsible for the technical design, manufacture, and supply of the complex thermal systems core to the plant’s operations.
The LAES technology operates by utilizing surplus renewable grid energy to cool air down to extreme temperatures until it liquefies. To release the stored energy, the liquid air is expanded back into a gaseous state through a turbine to generate electricity, delivering critical flexibility and long-term stability to the power grid.
