While Brazil took to the field, GO15 member and power grid operator National Electric System Operator (ONS) was working with precision, strategy, and cooperation to keep the country powered.
During Brazil’s first World Cup match, which took place on Saturday 13th June, against Morocco, the ONS monitored in real time the variations in energy consumption throughout the country.
- In the first half, there was a reduction of 5,500 MW in demand from the National Interconnected System (SIN).
- At halftime, at 7:55 pm, demand increased by approximately 2,800 MW in 8 minutes, typical behavior during major sporting events.
- With the end of the game, at 9:05 pm, a new increase of 4,300 MW in 20 minutes was recorded, reflecting the gradual return of population activities.
- Around 9:40 PM, the load returned to the typical behavior observed for a Saturday.
“We are prepared for the national team’s upcoming challenges, as well as the main games, such as the final on July 19th. The ONS (National System Operator) is working to monitor load behavior and will adopt all necessary measures so that Brazilians can cheer with the confidence that the energy supply will be guaranteed,” says ONS CEO & GO15 2026 Vice President Marcio Rea.
Half of GO15 members have national teams competing in the FIFA World Cup: we wish good luck and success to all!
